AEO vs GEO vs SEO What Is the Difference article cover

Quick answer: SEO improves visibility across search results. AEO focuses on concise answers used by answer surfaces such as featured snippets and voice results. GEO focuses on retrieval, use and citation in generative AI answers. The disciplines overlap heavily: accessible pages, clear intent, accurate facts and useful evidence support all three.

The labels describe emphasis, not three independent ranking systems that require three versions of every page.

What is SEO?

SEO helps search engines understand and surface content while helping users find relevant pages. It includes technical, on-page, off-page and local work.

Read what is SEO.

What is AEO?

AEO is the practice of formatting and clarifying information so answer systems can identify a direct response.

Common AEO patterns include:

  • 40–60 word definitions;
  • numbered steps;
  • concise comparison tables;
  • question-based headings;
  • accurate structured data where supported;
  • clear entity names;
  • short answers followed by depth.

AEO cannot force a featured snippet. Google selects featured snippets automatically.

Read how Google featured snippets work.

What is GEO?

GEO focuses on generative systems that retrieve multiple sources and synthesize a response. It emphasizes:

  • source discovery;
  • passage relevance;
  • citation and attribution;
  • original evidence;
  • entity clarity;
  • freshness;
  • AI visibility measurement.

Read what is GEO.

The overlap

A strong page for all three often has:

  • one clear intent;
  • crawlable canonical URL;
  • descriptive title and H1;
  • concise direct answer;
  • logical headings;
  • primary sources;
  • original value;
  • tables or steps where appropriate;
  • accurate dates;
  • internal links;
  • strong mobile experience.

This is normal good publishing—not a hidden AI optimization trick.

Key difference: the output format

SEO result

The user sees a title, URL and snippet and decides whether to click.

AEO result

The system extracts a concise answer and may show the source above or below it.

GEO result

The system synthesizes several pieces of evidence into a generated answer and may cite multiple URLs.

The same source can participate in all three.

Do you need separate content strategies?

Use one editorial strategy with different checks:

Editorial question SEO AEO GEO
Can systems access it? Required Required Required
Does it match intent? Core Core Core
Is there a direct answer? Useful Central Useful
Is evidence sourceable? Valuable Helpful Central
Can it earn a click? Central Sometimes Sometimes
Can citations be measured? Limited SERP checks Platform reports and repeated tests

Do not publish three duplicate pages with minor wording changes.

Structured data and AEO/GEO

Structured data helps search engines understand page entities and can make content eligible for supported rich results.

It does not:

  • guarantee a featured snippet;
  • guarantee an AI citation;
  • replace visible content;
  • create a special GEO ranking signal;
  • justify marking up hidden or false information.

Google says no special schema is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Featured snippet Generative AI answer
Usually highlights one main source Can synthesize several sources
Often extracts a paragraph, list or table Generates new wording
Appears in traditional results Appears in AI answer experience
Publisher can use nosnippet controls Controls vary by platform
Selection is query-specific Retrieval can involve query expansion

Both can change between searches and over time.

Measurement

SEO metrics

  • impressions;
  • clicks;
  • CTR;
  • average position;
  • conversions.

AEO metrics

  • featured snippet presence;
  • related-question coverage;
  • query-level CTR;
  • voice or answer referrals where measurable.

GEO metrics

  • brand mentions;
  • citations;
  • cited pages;
  • prompt coverage;
  • AI referral traffic;
  • assisted conversions;
  • citation accuracy.

Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report provides citation data across Microsoft generative experiences. Google’s current documentation points to its generative AI performance reporting in Search Console.

A combined optimization workflow

  1. Identify the real user question.
  2. Choose one canonical page.
  3. Answer in one concise block.
  4. Add explanation and examples.
  5. Support facts with primary sources.
  6. Use a list or table when it fits.
  7. Expose author and review date.
  8. Add descriptive internal links.
  9. verify crawl and index controls.
  10. Measure search, answers and citations separately.

Use the on-page SEO checklist and AI-search content guide.

Common myths

“AEO replaces SEO”

Answer surfaces normally depend on discoverable, relevant source content.

“GEO requires llms.txt for Google”

Google says it does not use llms.txt for Search or its generative features.

“FAQ schema guarantees answers”

No. Structured data eligibility and result selection are separate.

“AI mentions always create traffic”

Many mentions produce no click. Measure citation and conversion separately.

Frequently asked questions

Which should a new SaaS focus on first?

Start with technical SEO, clear product pages and useful intent-matched content. Add answer and citation checks to that foundation.

No. It also applies to featured snippets, related questions and other direct-answer surfaces.

Is GEO only for ChatGPT?

No. It covers generative discovery across AI search and answer systems.

Can one article target SEO, AEO and GEO?

Yes. A well-structured, evidence-rich article can support all three without duplicate versions.
