How to use it

Look up a domain’s public registration details for free using RDAP, the modern successor to WHOIS. Check its registrar, registration and expiry dates, nameservers and status when the registry publishes them. No account is required, and results can be downloaded as CSV.

  1. Enter a domain. Subdomains are reduced to the registered domain.
  2. Look up its registry through the IANA RDAP bootstrap directory.
  3. Review public registration events and nameservers, including the check time.

Read domain registration data from its registry

The lookup uses the IANA RDAP bootstrap directory to find an HTTPS registry service. Subdomains are reduced to the registered domain: a lookup for www.example.com requests the registration record for example.com.

The report includes the registrar, registration date, expiry date, last-changed date, domain status, nameservers and DNSSEC delegation when available. It does not collect or display private registrant contact information.

Interpret missing fields and expiry dates

“Not published” means the registry response did not include that field. An unsupported registry, timeout or missing registration response does not prove that a domain is available to register.

A registry expiry date describes the domain registration, not its website certificate or hosting subscription. Check your registrar account before making renewal decisions. Successful registration readings may be reused for up to one hour.

Measurement and usage limits

WHOIS lookup uses its modern successor, RDAP, over HTTPS. Some country registries are unsupported. Private owner contacts are not collected or displayed. A missing response does not guarantee the domain is available to buy.

Why does this WHOIS lookup use RDAP?
RDAP provides domain registration information over HTTPS in a structured format. IndieTools discovers the appropriate registry through IANA and reads its public RDAP response rather than using legacy port-43 WHOIS.
Can I find a domain owner’s private contact details?
No. This tool reports public registration metadata and deliberately does not collect or display private owner contacts. A missing contact field is not evidence that a domain has no owner.
Does a missing WHOIS result mean a domain is available?
No. A registry can be unsupported, temporarily unavailable or rate-limited. Confirm registration availability with a registrar; this lookup does not make availability-to-buy claims.
Is this tool free and do I need an account?
It is free to use without an account. Domain checks have request limits to protect public services. Results can be downloaded from this page.
