How to use it
Count words, characters and paragraphs, and calculate an estimated reading time for your text. Choose a reading speed from 50 to 1,000 words per minute or use the default of 200. This free tool processes text in your browser without an account.
- Paste the content you plan to publish.
- Choose an estimated reading speed in words per minute.
- Review the counts as editing signals, not as a quality or ranking score.
Understand the word and character counts
The word counter uses Unicode-aware word segmentation rather than splitting only on spaces. Character counts use grapheme clusters, which group combined characters and many emoji sequences as a reader sees them. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines.
Use the counts when editing product descriptions, articles or help pages. Other editors can use different counting rules, particularly for punctuation, emoji and languages without spaces, so compare methods before treating small differences as an error.
Calculate a reading-time estimate
Reading time is the word count divided by the selected words-per-minute rate, rounded up to a whole minute with a minimum of one minute. The default is 200 words per minute, and you can choose a value between 50 and 1,000.
This is a planning estimate, not a measurement of a particular reader. Language, subject difficulty, diagrams and familiarity can change how long reading takes. Word count alone is not a content-quality score or a search-ranking target.
Measurement and usage limits

Frequently asked questions
- How is reading time calculated?
- The tool divides the counted words by your selected reading speed, rounds up to the next whole minute and shows at least one minute. You can change the default 200 words per minute within the supported 50–1,000 range.
- Why can my word count differ from another editor?
- Different applications use different word and character boundaries. This tool uses Unicode-aware word and grapheme segmentation. Punctuation, combining characters, emoji and languages without spaces can produce differences between counting methods.
- Is there an ideal word count for SEO?
- There is no word-count target in this tool that predicts search performance. Use enough clear, accurate content to answer the reader’s question, and use the counts as editing aids rather than adding words to reach a score.
- Is this tool free and do I need an account?
- It is free to use without an account. You can copy or download the generated result from this page.
- Where is my input processed?
- Input is processed in your browser, without uploading, saving or adding it to the page URL.
