About Elasticnote

What is Elasticnote?

Ever feel like your notes are being held hostage by an app? You spend hours writing, researching, and organising ideas, only to discover they're trapped in someone else's cloud. Want to take them elsewhere? Suddenly, it's complicated. We thought there should be a better way, so we built Elasticnote — a privacy-first, local-first workspace for Markdown, LaTeX, research, and everyday productivity.

With Elasticnote, you decide where your notes live. Keep them in your browser, save portable files in a local folder, or connect your own cloud storage. And when your ideas grow beyond simple notes, you've got tasks, calendars, Kanban boards, diagrams, and optional AI ready to help. Your notes, your storage, your rules. Simple, right?

Who is it for?

Elasticnote is for anyone tired of juggling five apps just to get one thing done. Researchers and academics can write papers with LaTeX, equations, citations, and PDF tools. Developers can maintain technical documentation in Markdown. Students and professionals can organise notes, tasks, schedules, and projects in one place. And privacy-conscious users can keep their work local without automatically sharing it with cloud services or AI providers.

Key features

  • Local-first Markdown: Create portable notes in your browser or local folders, without being locked into a proprietary cloud.

  • LaTeX and research tools: Write mathematical equations, manage citations and bibliographies, and prepare academic documents for PDF publishing.

  • Calendar and tasks: Bring Daily Notes, to-do lists, deadlines, and planning together.

  • Kanban boards and diagrams: Visualise projects, connect ideas, and finally organise that side project you've been postponing since 2022.

  • Bring your own cloud: Connect Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or GitHub with Pro. Your cloud, your choice.

  • Flexible editing: Enjoy a visual editor for everyday writing or work directly in Markdown when you want more control.

  • Optional AI and MCP: Use supported local AI models or bring your own API keys, with permission-controlled access to your workspace.

  • Browser extensions: Take notes while browsing with side-panel extensions for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.

How it works

Getting started is easy. Open Elasticnote on the web or in your browser's side panel, create a notebook, and start writing. Use Markdown or the visual editor for everyday notes, or LaTeX tools for more technical projects. Add tasks, calendar events, and Kanban boards as your work grows. Keep everything in your browser, connect a local folder, or use your preferred supported cloud provider. You can start taking local notes without creating an account, and AI is completely optional. No complicated setup, no unnecessary hoops.

Use cases

Research and academia: Collect references, organise research materials, write equations, manage citations, and prepare LaTeX documents while keeping control of your files. We can't promise your supervisor won't request another revision, though.

Development and technical writing: Maintain documentation, save code snippets, organise technical notes, and track project tasks with Kanban boards. Portable Markdown files make it easier to fit Elasticnote into your existing workflow.

Studying and everyday productivity: Keep lecture notes, assignments, deadlines, daily plans, and personal projects together. Spend less time hunting through browser tabs and more time getting things done.

Pricing

Elasticnote is free to start! The Free plan includes core note-taking, Markdown editing, and local-first storage, with no account required for local use. Need more flexibility? The Lifetime option is perfect if your growing collection of subscriptions already needs its own spreadsheet.

Alternatives

Obsidian is a powerful Markdown knowledge management app. Elasticnote takes a broader approach by combining Markdown and LaTeX research workflows with built-in calendars, tasks, Kanban boards, and browser side-panel extensions.

Notion offers a feature-rich, cloud-based workspace. Elasticnote focuses on privacy, local-first writing, and portable files, giving you more control over where your notes are stored. We like Notion, but we also like knowing exactly where our files live.

FAQ

Where are my notes stored?

Wherever you choose! Start with browser storage, use a local folder on your computer, or connect a supported cloud provider. Your work doesn't have to live on Elasticnote's servers.

Is Elasticnote free?

Absolutely! You can start taking local notes for free without creating an account. Pro adds unlimited notebooks, BYO cloud integrations, and other premium capabilities.

Can I use my own cloud storage?

Yes! Pro supports Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, and GitHub. Bring your own cloud instead of being forced into ours.

Do I have to use AI?

Not at all. AI is entirely optional. Your notes will work perfectly well without a chatbot supervising them. No robot feelings will be hurt.

Why did we build Elasticnote?

Because we believe your notes should belong to you, not the app you used to create them. Writing, researching, and organising ideas shouldn't mean sacrificing privacy or control over your files.

Our philosophy is simple: Write what you want. Store it where you want. Use AI if you want.

No digital handcuffs. No unnecessary drama. Just a flexible workspace that grows with your ideas.

Who it is for
Elasticnote is built for people who write, research, learn, and organise ideas — especially those who want more control over their files.
Problem it solves
Most note-taking apps make writing easy, but keeping control of your notes can be another story. Your ideas might be stored in a proprietary database, tied to a subscription, or dependent on a company's cloud servers. Moving your work elsewhere can become surprisingly complicated. For students, researchers, and developers, the problem goes further. A simple note-taking app often isn't enough for Markdown, LaTeX, equations, citations, and technical documents. So you end up switching between different tools for writing, research, tasks, calendars, and project management. Then there's AI. Many people want AI assistance without automatically sending their private notes to third-party services. The result? Scattered information, too many subscriptions, endless tab switching, and less control over your own work. We believe you shouldn't need five apps, three cloud accounts, and a small miracle just to organise your notes and finish a project.
The solution
With Elasticnote, your notes, research, and everyday planning finally have a place to work together. Start writing immediately using Markdown or a friendly visual editor. Need something more advanced? Create LaTeX documents, work with mathematical equations, manage citations, and prepare research papers for PDF publishing. Instead of jumping between apps, organise tasks, Daily Notes, calendars, Kanban boards, and diagrams alongside your writing. More importantly, you choose where your files live. Keep notes in your browser, work with portable files in a local folder, or connect your own Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or GitHub storage through Pro. You can also use optional local AI models or connect supported AI providers using your own API keys. AI is there when you need it, not something you're forced to use. And with Chrome, Edge, and Firefox side-panel extensions, your notes can sit right beside the websites you're researching. The result is a more organised workflow, fewer unnecessary app switches, and greater control over your knowledge. Less juggling. More writing. Your files stay yours.
What makes it unique
Elasticnote gives you powerful research and productivity tools without taking ownership of your files. Unlike cloud-only note-taking platforms, Elasticnote is designed around local-first workflows and portable storage. You can write in Markdown, work on LaTeX research documents, manage tasks and projects, and choose where your files are kept. What makes Elasticnote different is the combination of: Local-first storage: Keep notes in your browser or local folders. Bring-your-own cloud: Connect Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or GitHub with Pro. Markdown and LaTeX: Go from everyday notes to technical writing, citations, and PDF documents. Built-in productivity: Tasks, calendars, Daily Notes, Kanban boards, and diagrams in one workspace. Optional AI: Use compatible local models or your own API keys, with permission-controlled MCP support. Browser extensions: Take notes alongside websites using Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. You can start for free without creating an account for local notes. When you need more flexibility, Pro offers unlimited notebooks and cloud integrations, with monthly and Lifetime options. Why choose Elasticnote? Because your writing tools should adapt to your workflow, not force your work into theirs. Your notes. Your storage. Your freedom
